This society, a precursor of the Chester Natural History Society was founded on 27 November 1812 'for the acquirement and diffusion of literature and science' at a meeting in Commercial Rooms. J.D. Siddall, The Chester Society of Natural Science, Literature and Art from 1871 to 1911, p6, states that 'This society met in various rooms in the City; and Papers were read and discussed; and a Laboratory for Chemical work was fitted up... Apparently the Society collapsed after that date, having existed barely one year'.
